JOINT SENIOR HIGH MISSION EVENT CONTINUING

MIFFLINBURG, PA—  Camp Mount Luther, the Upper Susquehanna Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA), and the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania teamed up this week to provide a mission event for senior high age campers, known as X-Teen.  The campers arrived on Sunday, June 17, and will be traveling to the Williamsport area this weekend to do mission work before returning to camp for a time of wrap-up and debriefing.  They will return home on Tuesday night, June 26.

The camp, the synod, and the diocese are in their second year of doing a joint senior high program and have been partnering for seven years on other programs.  This year’s theme was “Crosswalk,” based on Micah 6:8.  The campers have been learning about doing service in God’s name and will be practicing that this weekend at two sites in Williamsport.  They will be hosted by All Saints Episcopal Church and Christ Episcopal Church and will be led by Rev. Patrick Collins and Rev. Robyn Szoke, and seven Camp Mount Luther staff.

Chad Hershberger, executive director of Camp Mount Luther, said this is a perfect way for kids to learn the importance of mission.

“We have about 35 participants who will be traveling to do work projects for these two parishes.  The kids have really bonded this week and will put their learnings to good use as they serve these people in Lycoming County.  They are really taking to heart the command that they’ve learned from scripture to do justice, love kindness, and walk humbly with their God,” Hershberger said.

The campers also had a special “Oscars” celebration on Wednesday night and went on an overnight camping trip on Tuesday.  Bishop Nathan Baxter of the Episcopal Diocese of Central PA and Bishop Robert L. Driesen of the Upper Susquehanna Synod, ELCA, talked to the campers on Friday afternoon, and sent them off in mission as they left Camp Mount Luther for Williamsport.

Camp Mount Luther, located five miles west of Mifflinburg, just off Route 45, runs year-round outdoor ministry programming, including an eight-week summer camp.  The camp is affiliated with the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America and has a partnership relationship with the Episcopal Diocese of Central Pennsylvania.  The camp facilities are available for retreats and other meetings for church and civic groups during the non-summer months.  The site is used as the Outdoor Education Center for the Shikellamy, South Williamsport, and Midd-West School Districts as well as the Peer Leadership site for the Selinsgrove School District.  The camp serves children, youth, and young adults in the Central Pennsylvania area. For more information on any of Camp Mount Luther’s programs call the camp at (570) 922-1587 or visit www.campmountluther.org.
