On July 4, 2010 our companion Diocese of Sao Paulo dedicated a new school and day care facility in the ParaisoÌpolis section of Sao Paulo. ParaisoÌpolis is a slum area with a population of about 80,000 people, and it is an area in which the Cathedral and the Diocese have maintained a mission presence for a number of years.
Partners in Mission Commission chair David Myers reports that in that time the needs of the community–particularly for after-school programs and day care–have grown substantially. To meet this growing need, the Diocese set out to raise $1.5 million for the construction of a new school and day care center. The new facility doubles the capacity of the church-operated program. Donors included local businesses and a number of multi-national corporations that have a presence in Sao Paulo–a city the size of New York. The mayor of Sao Paulo was on hand to help with the dedication festivities.
