On Saturday, March 10, from 10:00 to 2:00, a group of more than a dozen women from five other central Pennsylvania Episcopal churches met those from the local parish at Church of the Nativity in Newport.

Their common bond was as members of the group Sacred Stitches.
Parishes represented in addition to Nativity were: St. John's, Lancaster, St. James, Lancaster, St. Stephen's Cathedral, Mount Calvary, Camp Hill, and St. and St Andrew's in the Valley.
Some of the ladies knitted prayer shawls, full-sized and pocket-sized. Others worked on measuring for and sewing together pillow cases for the children's wing at Hershey Medical Center. Colorful fabric with appropriate motifs such as ghosts, trains, flowers, trucks and cars, to name a few, made the cases look cheerful and bright. More than two dozen were completed during the course of the 4 hour get-together. Several of the women took fabric home to make more, and one brought some already finished.
In conjunction with the organization ConKerr Cancer, the pillowcases, which have contrasting bodies and borders, will be donated to the hospital where they will make hospital stays more pleasant for chronically ill children.
ConKerr Cancer was started in 2002 when Cindy Kerr whose son had been in the hospital for long periods of time began making colorful pillowcases for him. They brightened up his hospital room and made him smile. In fact, the pillowcases became so significant to Ryan that Cindy and her friends decided to make them for other sick children as well.
In 2007, Cindy won the grand prize in the Martha Stewart Living "Dreamers into Doers" contest. The media attention attracted new donors and volunteers. Since then the organization has established chapters worldwide.
