Chapel of the Good Shepherd (The Rev. Cliff Johnston, priest-in-charge) piloted the parochial introduction to "Seeing the Face of God in Each Other," January 23, 2011 (Epiphany 3), in Hawk Run, PA.
Susan Hinton, who facilitated the pilot and is the Diocesan anti-racism training coordinator, preached and shared a 2006 pastoral letter as well as excerpts from a Desmond Tutu speech, "Why, as Christians, We Must Oppose Racism." Copies of the sermon's text, as well as an audio recording of the entire service, are available.
The service included a Litany for Social Penance and the hymn "In Christ There Is No East Nor West." Coffee Hour included friendly discussions of members' past experiences. "Education for Ministry," a Diocesan program of lay Christian Education, was discussed along with other means of delivering the 14 contact hours the anti-racism program requires. Other anti-racism activities based at the parish will follow.
"Seeing the Face of God in Each Other," as mandated by several General Conventions, is required for all ordained and lay leaders. For information on bringing this program to your parish, please contact co-chairs Arnold Gee or Greg Hinton (Bishop's Commission on Racism), or training coordinator Susan Hinton, at motormice@hotmail.com.
