On Saturday, October 6, 2012 over eighty clergy and diocesan staff gathered for a full day training to comply with the Diocesan policy of Safeguarding God’s Children and Safeguarding God’s People.

“Our full embrace of our “Zero Tolerance” policy has reaffirmed our need to fully commit to the Safe Church Training Program. It is critical that we do the right think and not what seems easy,” stated Bishop Nathan Baxter.

The importance of our “Zero Tolerance” policy has been recently elevated with the trial and conviction of Jerry Sandusky and the conviction of Monsignor William Lynn, the first senior official of the Roman Catholic Church in the United States to be convicted for covering up child sexual abuses by priests under his supervision. His conviction demonstrates that entire church is endangered when it stands by and allows abusive behavior to occur.

Bishop Nathan Baxter mandated this training for all clergy. “I cannot allow our church to be endangered because we have not done our best to train and prepare our clergy to avoid any kind of child or sexual abuse.”
