The Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania today renewed its companion relationship with the Diocese of Sao Paulo, Brazil, a part of the Igreja Episcopal Anglicana do Brasil (the autonomous Episcopal Church of Brazil).

Bishops Nathan D. Baxter of Central Pennsylvania and Roger Bird of the Diocese of Sao Paulo signed the covenant agreement for the renewal at the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania convention, meeting at Bucknell University.

Bishops Baxter and Bird sign the Covenant Renewal, flanked by members of the Partners in Mission Commission.

The covenant outlines priorities for the companion relationship, including shared and reciprocal education and training for clergy, seminarians and lay persons, emphasizing evangelism, parish and mission planting, as well as Scriptural study.

The companionship will give special attention to developing parish-to-parish relationships. More than a dozen central Pennsylvania congregations currently have companion relationships with their counterparts in the Sao Paulo region. The companionship originated in 2004 under the direction of Bishop Michael Creighton, working with Bishop Hirosi Ito, then Bishop of Sao Paulo. The current companion relationship will run through October, 2014.
