Canon Jane Butterfield led a recent Adult Forum at St. Andrew’s, State College on “Episcopalians and Mission.”
She described the history and the mission of Edwardes College, Peshawar, Pakistan. Edwardes College is a self-supporting coed institution of 2,950 students of whom about 90% are Muslim and 7% are Christian with about the same ration for faculty. When asked about the very sensitive subject of conversion to Christianity, Canon Butterfield noted that the Christian witness in the Edwardes College community is that it is an institution funded by Christians, but that it does not require its students to convert. The hope is that by educating young Muslim men and women alongside of their Christian brothers and sisters, both sides will be able to live in peace and harmony.
Canon Butterfield also preached at the 10 a.m. service at St. Andrew’s, describing the mission of Edwardes College.
