Dr. Stephen Sampson, DDS, recent senior warden at All Saints/Brookland parish in Potter County, received the 2011 Canon's Award for exemplary lay leadership. The award was presented at All Saints' service of Evening Prayer during the convocation's long-running annual Lenten Series.

Dr. Sampson's service (during the several years of Potter County parishes' transitions) was lifted up by the Rev. Canon Gregory P. Hinton, Rector, St. Paul's/Wellsboro, following a delicious meal hosted by All Saints' Episcopal Church Women.
The Rev. Janis Yskamp (Rector and Officiant) and the Rev. Dee Calhoun (Preacher) also remembered the late Canon John Whitney, as well as other Convocation friends not able to brave the evening's rare April snowstorm on the mountain.
The Canon's Award was established several years ago to honor Ed and Ruth Gamble, also from All Saints. The Award recognizes not only lay leadership within the parish, but also service and pro-active leadership beyond the honoree's own parish to strengthen the convocation. Another recipient was Edith Vetter, who was honored posthumously (accepted by her family on her behalf).
The Northern Tier Convocation Lenten Series provides opportunities for new and established parishioners and friends to build and renew Godly inter-parish relationships, and is an important foundation for Episcopal identity in the participating communities. Each week (Wednesdays), one parish hosts and one preacher is featured. This opportunity for post-winter fellowship starts the week after Ash Wednesday, with a 6:00 p.m. dish-to-pass supper followed by 7:00 p.m. Evening Prayer. The 2012 Canon's Award will again be presented during the 2012 Lenten Series. Click here for more information.
